Here’s how athletes can help you

Paul Giordano, Vanessa Stoykov

I’ve been running a media business in finance for a very long time – 20 years, in fact. And this is not my first show. But I’m particularly excited about it for one very good reason. This season in our program, the Secrets of the Money Masters, we take five different athletes on a journey to reach their financial goals.

What’s this got to do with you, you may ask? Lots. Because we all know Australians love sports. Athletes are usually among the most revered in our society. But the interesting thing about this is, when it comes to money, athletes are not different from you and me. They don’t have all the answers, and they need good advice to make the right financial decisions.

For some reason many people assume that those who are champions on the sporting field are also winners with money. In reality, this is rarely the case. You only have to watch the HBO series Ballers to see that on a grand scale – professional footballers blowing money like water and ending up with nothing.

Our athletes in Australia of course are a little different. They don’t earn as much as US sports stars, but they also don’t tend it blow it on wild purchases. They do, however, need financial advice and knowledge around investing to make their money work for them.

By watching this series, you will learn how to identify your most important goals for the short, medium and long term, and make an assessment on what may be holding you back with money (in fact, you can take the free quiz on my website here.) You will also see what a high-quality financial planner can do you for you – how they can be your money coach and help you make the right plan to set you up for the future you want.

You will also learn more about professional investing and how to think about investing your money for the long term. While most of us know something about property, investing globally in shares is something most of us know little about. This program shares knowledge from some of the most successful investors around the globe, and breaks it down into key messages that anybody can grasp.

While the thrust of the series is seeing these sports stars get their finances in order, our belief is that by showing them being vulnerable about their financial situation, viewers will also see it’s possible to benefit greatly through planning and investing. Even better, the organisation that made this program possible, OneVue, is creating starter investment portfolios for those who want to grab the opportunity and start investing.

Our athletes are all at very different stages of their lives – and I’m sure you will relate to some more than others. But take careful note of their financial goals and what it will cost to get there. Because you will need to do your numbers too. While I believe in the power of good financial planning, whether you choose an adviser or not, now is the time for you to think about your financial goals –your future self will thank you!

Enjoy the program and our talk show on Channel 9 every Saturday at 12pm. My guests will be the who’s who of the finance industry, and we are all there with one purpose in mind – to help you.
